Thank you for purchasing Interactive Geography version 1.5.  This CD-ROM version introduces many new and exciting features designed to make your use of this program more rewarding and enjoyable.  Please take a few moments to read this document, which covers the new features and special instructions for operation.

  5. QUICKSTART
  6.  
  7. To begin using Interactive Geography 1.5, just open the folder labeled "Pierian CampOS"  and double-click the icon labeled "Pierian CampOS."  This launches the Pierian CampOS application.  You do not need to copy any files or folders to your hard drive.

  9. To learn more about the new sound and narration features of Interactive Geography 1.5, please read the sections below.

  11. WHAT'S NEW
  12.  
  13. Ñ  Interactive Geography 1.5 contains fully narrated versions of each geography module.  The narration is accomplished with digitized sound files, not synthesized or computer generated voices.
  14. Ñ  A fully narrated Glossary is also included, to assist students with the pronunciation of key words.
  15. Ñ  Randomly generated special effects.

  17. In addition, version 1.5 is a fat binary.  The program will run in native mode on Power Macintosh computers, as well as on regular Macintoshes.

  19. INSTALLING INTERACTIVE GEOGRAPHY 1.5

  21. There are two folders on the CD-ROM, labeled Pierian CampOS and Sound Tools.

  23. The Pierian CampOS application is designed to run directly off the CD-ROM.  Therefore, no installer program is included, and you do not need to copy any of the files in the folder labeled "Pierian CampOS" onto your hard drive.

  25. The Sound Tools folder includes files you may need to install.  Inside are two folders labeled "Sound Manager 3.1" and "Apple Multimedia Tuner 2.0.1."

  27. The folder labeled "Sound Manager 3.1" contains the latest versions of the Apple Sound Manager extension and the Sound control panel.  If you are not using these versions, drag these two files to your System Folder.

  29. Included in the folder "Apple Multimedia Tuner 2.0.1" is the latest version of the Apple Multimedia Tuner extension.  Though Interactive Geography 1.5 does not specifically require this extension, you may find it helps performance if you have a Macintosh with 8 MB of RAM or less.

  31. After dragging the Sound Manager files (and, optionally the Multimedia tuner extension) to your System Folder, restart your Macintosh.  Insert the CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive and open the folder labeled "Pierian CampOS."

  33. USING THE PIERIAN CAMPOS APPLICATION WITH SOUND AND NARRATION

The first time you launch the Pierian CampOS, sound effects and narration will be enabled.  To disable sound effects, narration or both, you must enter the Administration building and log in as a teacher.  Navigate to the Customization room and click the Sound button.  A sound preferences window will appear.  Here you can enable/disable sound effects and narration.  Changes take effect immediately, and your selections will be saved to a preferences file when you quit the Pierian CampOS application.

If narration is enabled, a "replay" button will appear in the bottom right corner of each Geography module.  While text is being narrated, clicking the replay button will stop the narration.  Clicking the button again will replay the narration from the beginning.  Certain actions, such as opening the navigation palette (the purple triangle in the upper right hand corner) or beginning a Challenge, Skill or Activity will stop the narration and temporarily disable the replay button.

  39. MEMORY CONSIDERATIONS

Because the Pierian CampOS application can have multimedia projects attached to it, it may be necessary to increase the amount of memory allocated to the Pierian CampOS to incorporate these projects.  This is particularly true when attaching projects that include large graphics.  Since the memory allocation cannot be changed for applications stored on CD-ROM, we have included a version of the Pierian CampOS that has its preferred memory size preset to 3700K.  This version is called "Pierian CampOS (Large)" and should be used if you are having problems running attached projects.

  43. NOTE:  Some sounds, particularly the sound effects may break up or otherwise play incorrectly if virtual memory is turned on.  For best performance, disable virtual memory before launching the Pierian CampOS.
